Comment: Thanks so much for the nice card and what you wrote. I didn't have a college experience my self but through reading and activism I am learning and 'unlearning' and participating as best as I can. I always think I can do more but we do what we do. I'm connected with the local SURJ (showing up for Racial Justice) chapter and that helps to guide me into action and connect with other groups working on change. That's funny about your Son and Teagens. I've never seen the one on Dr. Who but I've been told there is one :)
Response: Thanks for participating in the swap, but most of all for your civic participation. I love being part of an active caring community, and Swap-bot is one place I find inspiration. Today, you are my inspiration!

Comment: What a wonderful portrait you've painted. I just love this watercolor. In learning to paint people, have there been any particularly good instructions you've found? Thanks again for your beautiful and touching artwork.
Response: I am really working on looking at layers and experimenting with undertones and shadows, which I learned by painting over my "old" watercolors, thanks to one fun teacher I took a one-day class from! Also drawing strategies and proportions. Sadly, it isn'tl there yet! I am enjoying some Urban Sketching classes from Craftsy, hoping that they'll support me learning.

Comment: Thanks for the TWO zines and the sticker Being poor, growing up and living in Native American communities as a minority, and being in the Army, even as a white woman, I have never felt privileged. I have had to deal with discrimination every day and work hard for every scrap of self worth and self esteem. Each person has their own row to hoe and it doesn't make any one person less or more than the rest. The process of living and living true to yourself and being the best you, you can be is the goal. Being conscious and present is the beginning. Great job! Hugs from Alaska, Sherry

Comment: I absolutely love this card! I knew it was special when even my sharp scissors wouldnt split the envelope! Thank you so much! Have you looked into using watercolor sticks, pencils or markers? There are also bladder pens that would eliminate the need for a water well. Also, the easel that I use is a "french." What is nice about that is you can set the easel and a nearly horizontal position. If you stretch your paper to a board this would be easy! Field books are sometimes made with watercolor paper, and the hard covers make it nice to throw in a pack and go! Happy painting and happy Halloween!
Response: Thanks, I am taking up your inspiration and running with it! :)

These remind me of the snapping turtles we have down here. I always try to stop to carry a turtle across the road if they are in the middle, but the long necks and sharp claws on the snappers make me nervous! Thanks so much!

Comment: Holy cow. Out do yourself much? Very cool piece that I adore. I love the vellum sleeve and the assemblage of parts. Very neat. I love your note it seems very interesting though I'm going to have to hire a handwriting expert to help translate it. Something about omega dogs, evolution and altruism? Sort of like one of those found poems - I only get every 5th or 3rd word. LOL. Thank you very much for the whole thing. Fun from beginning to end.
Response: Ha! Need to work on the handwriting!! Yes, all those things were mentioned. I thought the bird eating the butterfly and the decaying leaf were sort of dark, but the feather and fabric were sort of innocent. Nature is endlessly fascinating and full of ways to interpret whatever you want out of it. The windows are such a cool concept; you can pick and choose what you see! We always eat herring, which is disgusting, and i thought that was part of the deal - suffer to gather good luck (must be my Catholic upbringing). I'm switching to dumplings! Thanks again and happy new year to you!! XOXOXOXO
Response: Hopefully we can have joy and suffering, right?! Happy dumplinging!!

I want to hang him up like he's flying, but we just had our ceiling done real fancy-like and I don't think I can get away with hanging him up there. Maybe under my loft bed, if I can find a space. He is great! I love his little eyelashes and the tale of the two dudes is hilarious! Thank you so much for another wonderful swap! I can't wait for your next one (let me know if there is another one, alright?).
Response: Oh, Man in Black -- glad he's finding a way into your space -- he's the subtler of the duo, for sure. I was worried that his wings were looking too bat-like; I have not attempted anything like him before. May his eyelashes stay adorable for a while :) So ... any interest in a swap based on an article from the Onion on the Get Down versus Get On UP debate in the National Funk Congress? George Clinton would inspire some awesome creativity ... ?

Comment: After much deliberation and review by our 17 committees and the custodial staff, the Ministry has decided to grant you a 50 pence amount for your short walk (that's $0.77 in your inferior American dollars). We were duly impressed with your subversion of the weiner-mobile status quo in taking the unorthordox picture from the back of the vehicle (an email will be forthcoming with contact details to send the image for our files.) We also appreciate your inclusion of the mustard artifact. All members of the 17 committees and custodial staff relish mustard on their bangers in the morning (except Nigel who uses ketchup, but we allow him to stay in the Ministry because his skip, hop, jump, back flip perambulation is so awe-inspiring and sublime). We eagerly await further grant applications. Cheerio!
Response: I am honored to receive this incredible grant. I will apply it toward my citation for reverse-wienermobile-maneuver number one, which, alas, is punished more severely than the use of ketchup within the limits of this municipality. If I had only thought to stand on my head first, then I could have received an exemption under the circus performance code. I do thank the committee, and await instructions as to submission of family photo at the juncture of Wienermobile and University Avenues.

But you asked about keeping the pieces in place - I pin, pin, pin, sew, iron and pin some more. When I quilt, I use a walking foot attachment on my machine so I have feed dogs on top and bottom and that helps to keep the pieces in alignment, too. Thank you!

Response: We have had a lot of great bike rides lately -- it is becoming a favored form of transportation! I had a double bike ride lately, due to objects flung from bike trailer. When we found the most all-important object, thanks to another cyclist, it had a little slug hitch-hiking. Random moments :)

Comment: Holy mackeroly, this is awesome. I don't even know what I like best - I was dazzled by the fact that the packing tape came off easily (!) and then finding out that you made the cover from plastic bags was also a treat. But I think my very favourite thing was the tiny notes you embedded into the tape to direct me on how to open the book. Incredibly fun mail day! Thanks!!
Response: That's hilarious! I stress about opening mail correctly with my weirder experiments -- a few wrecked newspaper hats has taught me to be cautious!! :) Packing tape rocks when combined with ironed plastic bags!

Comment: Creative idea! I am a little confused, though when you say it's good for 3 more sends. The only way I see it is you can pick which picture you like best and then you fold the address section back onto the opposite side of the picture you choose. So there would only be 1 send unless you are also counting the other blank side as a PC? But that would only be 2, not 3. Man, I hope I make sense here....lol! 5/6/14 In rating my other partner I noticed that I failed to mark the heart box as I had intended to do for you. Sorry for my slip up, your card was genius!

Comment: What a complete load of crap! I mean awesome random pieces of shit! And random, yes you have definitely fulfilled the swap requirement ten times over. HA. The crap just kept coming and coming out of the envie. Hmmm, if I had to pick my favorite POS what would it be?...I don't know if I can choose. The Hector the wrestler finger puppet is right up there at the top, as is the handy louse removal tip card. Please tell me it is not infused with eggs!?! How appropriate for Easter is the tiny wabbit with the pink scarf! How did you know my memory is fading and I need flash cards to remember my arm muscles? Or is that for the wrestler? HAHA I am going to a wedding next month and will use the elephant trunk in the tent as the gift card. Snort. The douchebag post its, those aren't shit! Those will be very useful. So, is that bacon on that cutout? I tested to see if it is scratch and sniff but it might also be a camera image of a colonoscopy, now not sure which. Um, I really have no words for the photographs of the rainbow colored stuffy's bathroom shenanigans. That one might wins the prize for most bizarre shit. Bwahah! I think those will make awesome postcards. The vintage PCs are neat, in fact I might frame the Peaceful Valley one. I had to Google for Holle and love the story of that. So, am I supposed to stuff her as a pillow or as a piñata? I will use the clear photo pockets in a craft as well as the felt tree I think might work great on my Gelli plate. The other various small creatures are very cute and I'm sure will find their way into some useful POS project. Thanks for the window into your shitty world! I like you a lot.
Response: OH, what a wonderful swap -- it brings tears to my eyes to see my RPS appreciated, and to find Hector and Holle a new home! Holle was stuffed, not sure if I should have sent her that way, but hey! She's yours now. Just know that Hector has a big crush on her and I have no control over his thumb-wrestling instincts. Lice removal tips was sent as a solicitation in the mail. Bacon affirmative, colonoscopy negative, but that would make a very interesting coaster, indeed. The chameleon using the sink was a visual for my son. The wedding PC was found in the library stacks, I thought it completely unique but found an identical one in an antique store after I sent you the other one! I am not sure why I put the scarf on the wabbit -- I probably thought it might look cute and didn't want to throw away that teensy scrap of fabric ... Well, anyway, thanks for appreciating all the strange RPS that goes down here!!

I have to say, and it kills me to tell you, because I can tell you spent a lot of time on it, that your resin seems to have melted into a strange formation. Upon opening, part of it came apart. But I know you are trying something new, so that's ok. You'll get better as you go along with it. Thanks for swapping with me. The OC postcard images were really vintagey and cute.

Comment: Thank you so much for your wonderful hexaflexagon! And you know what, there even is a side F! Which you left blank as you did not know it excisted probably. When (of maybe you already did) receive yours turn the hexaflexaxon counter clockwise when you want to make your next move. Do this a couple of times and you will see, side F appears. ;0) Thank you also for your wonderful card and note. One of those places on my list I would love to visit one day (when our kids are a little older). Hope to see you again in the near future for another swap.
Response: I was looking for side F for another 10 minutes or so as well -- I tried the "double flex" trick that I discovered when I was looking for B and it jammed and I had to go backwards. My husband said that I was imagining that F was there -- so glad to know that it exists, and I am sorry I missed it! Never hexaflex for the first time without an experienced guide, I guess -- thanks! Ecuador is beautiful -- it has been so long since I have been there, but I remember the green mountains very vividly! :)

Comment: Thank you for the clever coaster mod! I love your concept, and am so glad you had fun with it (that's what this group is all about after all). I'd not heard of Fforde/Thursday Next actually...will have to check it out (I'm currently reading Snuff by Mr. Pratchett...when I'm not distracted by other things). It's always nice coming across another Discworld lover on the 'bot! Cheers :D
Response: I really liked Snuff -- of course, Sam Vimes is one of my favorite Discworld characters, and I love how doggedly he pursues justice. Unseen Academicals is my current read -- I only skimmed it when it was released. I am almost exclusively "reading" by audiobook, sadly. Toddler related literacy deficit :) I hope that you enjoy Thursday Next, Stig, and Pickwick! I love Fforde's Nursery Crime series as well ...

Comment: Hi! Your ATCs were perfect for me. I saw the Dalai Lama up in Canada several years ago. It was quite something and very special that he is supporting the research into meditation and the brain. And the fact that we all really do sing the body electric is amazing! I do Reiki which is energy work. I do literally feel the energy move through me when working on someone. The body electric indeed! Thank you!
Response: I am so glad that the ATC's suit you! I immediately thought of the meditation researchers after reading your profile -- and brains make me think of neurotransmitters -- but that comparison of neurotransmission to Trans Atlantic cable! That was precious! So glad it describes your energy work as well :)

Of course if you start with Terry Pratchett you can hardly go wrong! I haven't read Thief of Time yet, but I'm adding it to my list. Thanks for the extra goodies, especially for the loon cartoon on the back of the envelope. This one's going into the BigBlackBook!
Response: So glad that you liked the loon cartoon, I think that was my favorite part, although I did love doing the poetry. Terry Pratchett is just ... well, I can't really compare him to anyone. (My favorite religion) Don't get too hung up on not being "immaterial" - I doubt you're looking to reach full enlightenment, just some peace of mind. I'm pretty sure the Dalai Lama wouldn't mind. He encourages each person to develop his or her own "path." By the way, try reading some of Tich Nhat Hanh's work.
Response: Peace of mind sounds very good! I do enjoy Tich Nhat Hanh, when I can sit still enough! I am still trying to find a quote from a nun who was born in Tibet, she was talking about raising kids as a meditation. Your presence with your children as the meditation. It was really beautiful.

Comment: thank you so much for the lovely fox card - i also love your repurposed card. and i particularly love the correspondence with your card! I love the 7 brides movie, have been watching it since i was six, PPZ isn't my favorite, but is certainly fun - nothing can compare to Ms. Austen herself, I completely agree with you! i hope you have a merry xmas :)
Response: I am so glad that you liked the fox! He seemed like the card for you. Is there a Jane Austen novel that you especially like? I am most fond of Persuasion, but I find Northanger Abbey the most hilarious and Pride and Prejudice the Colin Firthiest :) I first read Pride and Prejudice in a situation when it was the ONLY book in English I could get my hands on, and I even read the extensive annotations as a result. I have been hooked ever since. All about those annotations, I guess.

Comment: Heh. I wonder sometimes if I should be more amazed that I cross the Mississippi twice every day. It IS kinda cool, but you forget about it. I LOVE your idea of sewing cardboard chunks together into a postcard. I may have to steal that idea. Lemme know if you try it. I DO sew on cards, but I used to make a lot of fabric postcards and I usually forget I could sew on paper and cardboard.
Response: I am still getting used to what gets mangled in the mail and what doesn't -- I am afraid that I may be a bit TOO adventurous in the sewing postcards together department .. but boy is it fun. One problem is that I am using my modern machine and I should break out the ancient tank of a Pfaff -- it would handle the different textures and heights of paper better.

Comment: LOVE the ornaments and the little black bear extras you picked based on my profile! Thank you sooooo very much!
Response: Glad you liked them! I got all inspired making fabric flowers in a swap, and then I had DuhBe's beautiful roses lying around and thought they would work in a cotton fabric, too. Here's the tutorial for the pointy flowers: http://mouseinmypocket.com/2010/10/fabric-flower-tutorial-1-pointy-petals/ , then I just sewed them back to back and added fabric roses to cover the sewing. Still struggling with the glue thing, but it helps to set a heavy can on them while they are drying ;)

Comment: Hi, I love Wind in the Willows but have to say that you'd probably find it really hard to find anywhere similar to the places in the book now! Most of the country is just so built up that the serenity down by the riverside is just not there.
Response: Sigh .. I figured that would probably be the case. It's the same here, a lot of places I used to wander about it as a kid are being sold and built up. I think that I remember that the area used to be full of these huge dikes that sort of supported the whole marsh environment. Wow, wish I could have seen that! So .. did you have a favorite Wind in the Willows character?
