It's just making your preference known. But it's up to the sender to go by it or not.

Maybe a silly question, but: what exactly is a recipe postcard? A postcard with a recipe printed on it, on the front? Or a postcard with a picture of any old thing, where I write a recipe on the back?

A recipe postcard is a postcard that has a recipe printed on the front. Although I have seen a couple where the picture of the food is on the front, and the recipe is printed on the back. Most of them though have everything printed on the front (picture of the food and the recipe). Hope that helps.
