He traveled by land to get the information the Portuguese needed to travel by sea to India (to get around Africa).
He never returned from his voyages and his intel was passed to a prieste who brought it to Portugal.
It's thought that Pêro ended his days in the Kingdom of the "Preste João" - nowadays is called Ethiopia, but then was the only christian kingdom in all of Africa.
