I am finding this book (NIGHT CIRCUS) an incredible experience. I want to read faster, however, each chapter - short or long - makes me think and pause for reflection. I am at the halfway mark. What a gift you have given me!
Re: Hansel and Gretel, yeah I would be mad if some snotty kids came and tried to eat my fabulous candy dream house. (Of course, I mean, I get mad when someone tries to steal a few of my M&Ms. I have no idea what I'd do if they tried to eat my windows.) It's interesting that you find the witch to be misunderstood. I've always assumed that the candy house was a trap to lure kids to her so she could eat them. If there was a famine and there were a lot of hungry kids around (which there probably were, considering the historical context), then a candy house is a pretty clever way to attract victims. I also think that an evil witch who goes around eating people has to assume a certain degree of risk and expect retribution sooner or later. ;)
