Welcome!

Easter Sunday 2010: I awoke with no plans so it seemed the perfect time to update my profile. To everyone with kidlets who organized decorated-egg-and-candy hunts and bought new springtime dresses, I hope the weather was pretty and the meal delicious. My activities remained inside where I dedicated several hours to getting-to-know-and-revealing myself. Thus, after more than a year of Swap-botting, I finally have a filled-out profile. Please enjoy the read.

About Me

As a native Midwesterner, I appreciate changes in the weather. I like seasons as they move through each phase. Walking in crunchy piles of dried leaves, seeing reds, oranges and golds on trees, and smelling smoke in crisp breezes top my autumnal memories. I love snow storms, wind gales, mean-looking clouds, tornadoes, thunder and lightning, river confluences (like where the Mississippi and the Missouri join), and seeing the ground awaken with green shoots that become daffodils or lilac blossoms.

George Eberhart is my one-and-only husband. Although I never expected to get married, I did and it was one of my best decisions. We had an outdoor wedding at noon on 6 June 1982 beneath the white columns of the historic Ward-Meade house in Topeka, Kansas. That was followed by a barbecue in my backyard and an evening square dance. In the afternoon, I'd scheduled a hot air balloon ride (hence the hot air balloon on our wedding cake), but due to high winds, the balloonist canceled our first attempt. Even so, that day still surpasses all others!

Our honeymoon was a U-Haul truck lugging my stuff to George's condo in Chicago. We have lived in the same neighborhood ever since.

Postcards

I am a lifelong postcard collector, who for several years has written about postcards, mainly of the modern variety. I was a columnist for Postcard Collector until that magazine folded. My favorites are recipe postcards. But I also savor food & beverage-related postcards such as those that picture apples, bananas, watermelons, pizza, cupcakes, ice cream, root beer and cook-book covers.

I also like tourism and welcome center postcards, signs that fill most of the postcard, festivals and farmers markets, mailbox and please-writes, and postcards about postcards. I have categories for barns, wind farms, puffins, lilacs, bookmobiles, lenticulars, water towers, and pomegranates (the fruit not the publisher). I collect postcards issued by Cabela's and Mary Engelbreit; about the Lewis&Clark expedition, 11 September 2001, and the Last Supper (although I am NOT religious); and artists Frida Kahlo, Keith Haring, Sally Cruikshank, Donald Evans, Paul Giovanopoulos, and Rick Geary. Zippy makes me laugh even though I don't always get Bill Griffith's humor. I like superlatives (largest, tallest, longest, smallest, first, oldest) as shown and described on postcards such as the world's largest fry pan (hanging in Long Beach, Washington) or world's largest cheese (housed in a refrigerated truck in Neillsville, Wisconsin). These postcard claims crack me up: Who can prove (or disprove) them?!? I enjoy The Simpsons, Twin Peaks, Hello Kitty, and Dr. Seuss and seek postcards about them.

I spell "postcard" as one word.

Rubber stamps

I'm an avid rubber stamper and get a get kick out of postcards about them. I use rubber stamps and send postcards nearly every day.

Before moving to Chicago, I worked at a rubber stamp shop in Topeka, Kansas. At that time, I'd stay up overnight fulfilling orders for home address and corporate stamps. It was hours and hours of setting type by hand, vulcanizing pink rubber, cutting out the dies, sawing wooden mounts and inhaling rubber cement as I assembled the stamps. I worked at a traditional stamp-and-key business, and I miss Bob Croll, the hunchbacked proprietor. We'd talk and listen to the radio from Chicago to pass the work night away. It proved to be my favorite job.

I have several decades accumulation of rubber stamps that I bought and/or made myself. It saddens me when one of them dries up to the point of no longer making an impression. I have, alas, lost several that way. However, I'm still on the lookout for stamps that will brighten postcards, letters, and packaging. I like hearts and stars (as rubber stamps and as stickers) along with rubber stamps of rubber stamps. Other favorites include thank you, mail-related, pointing hands, Halloween (especially happy Jack O'Lanterns), Groundhog Day, Kansas, hot dogs, and bakery rubber stamps. Seasonally, I go for the major U.S. holidays as well as snow and winter; leaves and autumn; flowers and spring; and on-vacation/summer rubber stamps.

Favorite Movies

I love movies and try to watch at least one daily. Since April 1999, I've kept a computer list of each movie seen with the title, release date, where seen, director (when relevant) and major actors. I joined Netflix early (November 2000) and enjoy watching movies with subtitles, even when it's in English. We've dubbed this practice "reading movies."

Great pleasure comes after viewing when I consult the Internet Movie Database (imdb.com) to check for trivia, cast lists and reviews. I read movie reviews all the time and especially like the writing styles of Roger Ebert (expect when he makes sloppy factual errors), Kenneth Turan, James Berardinelli, Stephanie Zacharek, A.O. Scott, Michael Phillips, Lisa Schwarzbaum, and Owen Gleiberman.

I have been asked in the past to name my 10 favorite movies and am still resisting. Overall, I enjoy movies about friendship. And food. And mysteries. And thrillers. And action-adventures. And documentaries.

For the last few years, we have given over our Sunday nights to an array of intense, well-acted dramatic series on cable. These include "Oz," "The Sopranos," "Six Feet Under," "Carnivรƒย le," "Big Love," "True Blood," "Mad Men," "Treme," "Dexter," and "Boardwalk Empire."

I'm a sucker for well-written dialogue, well-developed characters, and movie poster postcards.

Travels

As a former travel agent, I enjoy all aspects of travel: the planning, the packing, the movement while seeing new places and people, and the finding of postcards. I was lucky to have a father who loved to travel, so I got to attend the Seattle World's Fair in 1962, Expo 67 in Montreal, and Expo 70 in Osaka. Right after I graduated from high school, my family and I flew to London (on the day Bobby Kennedy was assassinated) and toured the continent for a couple of months in a forest-green VW camper we purchased brand new from the factory in Stuttgart. Much to my amazement (and in alphabetical order), I have been to Austria, the Bahamas, Canada, Cuba, Czechoslovakia (before splitting into the Czech Republic), Denmark, East Germany (prior to unification), England, France, Germany (George and I hammered on the Berlin Wall to help take it down), Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Liechtenstein, Mexico, Monaco, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, Switzerland, and all of the states in the U.S.of A. except Alaska (it's at the top of my bucket list).

Happy Halloween!

Autumn is my favorite time of year as the leaves turn and the temperatures cool. Mother Nature seems in flux as she can't quite decide whether its hot enough to still wear shorts to tote items to the post office or if jeans and a sweatshirt are needed. But it's always worth finding out.

Swaps

I am a generous trader. Before completing a Swap-bot assignment, I study each profile and try to share more than is expected. And I never met an envelope I didn't want to decorate.

Comment: Thanks for both wonderful postcards - now I'll look on Netflix for the film. I *especially* like the stamps. We live close to the Mississippi River, and the Great River Road. Little did I imagine when I lived back east that I would commute back and forth across it for work. When I worked in India I would tell people I lived near the Mississippi River and Canada and they knew where I lived, but not when I said I was from Minnesota.

I just got your fantastic PCs from your heart : ) I love them all and it was so good to hear from you again. . . I wondered what happened to you 'cause I missed you! I haven't received any of the new 'love' stamps in any of my swaps either and guess I haven't been to the PO since they were issued, but they are very pretty. I understand completely about taking a break and have done that myself but then it beckons me back : ) Thanks again for the great PCs and hope we'll cross paths again ~~

Hello. I have somehow accumulated three, yes 3! recipe postcards (local foods) that I would like to send to you. I've always enjoyed receiving from you, since you actually decorate the backs of postcards too. It's inspired me to do the same. Can I interest you in a private swap so I could send you these fun recipe postcards? We could either do 3 postcards in an envelope, or sent individually, it's up to you. Hope you're having a wonderful weekend! ;)
