About Me

I just found out about swap-bot from a friend. I'm creatively-inclined and have done lots of artsy type of things in the past and am looking to do more as well as connect with new and interesting people.

In my day-to-day life, I have a background as a marine biologist and looking to find the right fit in my job. I'm thinking about going for my PhD and would like to focus on marine conservation. I've also recently joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary (the volunteer faction of the Coast Guard) and am having a blast crew-training.

So it goes without saying I love all things ocean or aquatic, as well as the outdoors in general. I'm fascinated by science.

I love writing and love to imbue all my writing - from science journalism to poetry - with a sense of passion. I'm also deeply connected to music. I sing and have been in a couple bands in the past.

I also have recently gotten into yoga and love the idea of taking time to honor myself and the world around me.

I love music and sing at open mics.

Favorite Music

I love music so my lists tend to be extensive. I listen to a lot of indie rock but really embrace lots of different styles.

Artists: U2, Tori Amos, Rilo Kiley, Jenny Lewis, Ray Lamontagne, Delta Spirit, Deer Tick, The Killers, Counting Crows, A Fine Frenzy, Avett Brothers, Swell Season, Mumford and Sons, Black Keys, White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The XX, The Ting Tings, Zoe Keating, Mute Math, Damien Rice, Lisa Hannigan, Be good Tanyas, Conor Oberst, Joe Purdy, Fiction Family, Eddie Vedder, Feist, Fiona Apple, Gogol Bordello, Radiohead, Remy Zero, Jeff Buckley, Kelly joe Phelps, etc., etc., etc.

Favorite Books

Anything by Zora Neal Hurston, Extremely loud and Incredibly close by Jonathan Safron-Foer, The History of Love, Anything by Salman Rushdie, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, Like Water for Elephants, Anything by Neil Gaiman,Christopher Moore, and David Sedaris. Collections of Poetry - I like contemporary poems, stuff by the beat poets like Ginsburg, poetry influenced by sounds (check out "In the Fishouse")

There's also certain magazines i really enjoy - Discover, Wired, Bust...

Favorite Television

I rarely have time to watch tv and often catch tv shows online. When I do watch, I like:

Scrubs, Chuck, Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies, Wonderfalls, Project Runway, Arrested Development, Friends, etc.

Favorite Movies

Stranger than fiction, Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, sunshine cleaning, Pitch Black, The Crow, resident Evil, 28 Days Later, Stage Beauty, Where the Heart Is, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Amalie, once, royal Tennenbaums,3:10 to Yuma, Equilibrium, The Lookout, Zoolander, Love Actually, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Saint, The Terminal

Favorite Podcasts

Please check out:

This American Life, WNYC Radiolab (the perfect mix of science, curiousity, philosophy, beautiful music, and humor), Hearing Voices, The Moth Story hour, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, Stuff You Should Know, NPR's Songs All Considered Live Concerts, NPR's Fresh Air

Crafts/Interests

I've joined swap-bot to indulge in my creativity more often. The kinds of crafts I've done in the past have involved crocheting and making jewelry among other things. I like jewelry that tends to be more delicate and sophisticated. A friend recently introduced me to the idea of ATCs and I'm totally intrigued.

I am hoping to see what makes other creative people tick and am looking forward to receiving little bits of art from other people. I joined the mermaid group as that's a more recent infatuation, along with older interests like bunnies and ocean-themed ideas.

I like writing and want to do some creative journaling with other people and perhaps swap poems, and other types of things like hand-written notes.

I like recipes, especially some that are a bit different. I do eat meat, but not excessively, and really have tried to incorporate healthier ingredients into my diet.

Comment: Hello Carrie, Thank you for the three poems you sent me for the "Not Quite Living Poets" swap. You shared a poem with me of one of my favorite poets, Langston Hughes. Thank you! As well, you introduced me to two new poets and some of their poetry. Thank you so much. I love the papers you chose to present your poetry on. Hope we meet up again in some future swaps.
