Favorite Music

Emilie Autumn has been dominating my playlist lately, other favorites include: Rare Air, specifically Primeval Flogging Molly, Drunken Lullabies some Splashdown, Tea Party, Colony 5, Weird Al, and a smattering of Nightwish

Favorite Books

Oh, books, where do I begin. I've had my nose in one book or another since I learned to read. I was introduced to sci-fi by way of Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time, and it got me hooked on the genre. I'm a sci-fi/fantasy nerd. You can't go wrong with Heinlein, and I'm a fan of Spider Robinson. Lately I've been branching into "urban fantasy," such as Jim Butcher's Dresden Files and Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson novels. Neil Gaiman is insanely brilliant.

It is impossible to outgrow Dr. Seuss.

There is no going wrong with Discworld. I adore everything I've ever read by Terry Pratchett; he is my favorite author.

Favorite Movies

Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the Princess Bride, Stardust, random kids' movies (Nightmare Before Christmas or Emperor's New Groove, anyone?), random comedies. Spaceballs still cracks me up.

Yeah, I know. I don't watch many movies.

Favorite Crafts

I love making things. Always have, and recently I've finally had the opportunity to dabble in lots of stuff. About eight months ago, we found space for it and I finally bought and set up a desk. Before then, i was working mostly from the couch, on tray tables.

I have carpal tunnel, so keep that in mind! I don't needle knit or crochet, I never got around to learning before figuring out that it would cause me horrible pain. Yarn would be largely wasted on me. I did loom-knitting for a while, though, so I still have some yarn I could send to you.

I don't scrapbook or make cards (though my Mom does, and my daughter loves stickers and tiny shinies, so feel free to send embellishments! They'll find a great home.)

I've dabbled in most of the things that interest me. I learned cross stitch as a child, and still find patterns that I want to make. Mostly Celtic knots, I love those things. I know how to do punch-needle, too, though it's rare that I run across a pattern that I want to make. most that I've seen are of the "puppies and ducklings" or "primitives" kind of thing, and that stuff is really cute... but not what I want to spend hours making. knots and abstracts are more fun.

I do needle tatting (lace making), which is a lot easier on my wrist than I'd thought it would be when I first picked up the needle. I truly recommend trying it, it looks a lot more complicated than it is, and the results are very impressive.

I made a few pieces of wire jewelry, and I really should pull those tools back out now that I have actual space to work with. It was fun.

What I did when I first got the desk up, though, instead of pulling out my wire and beads, was get in to polymer clay. I'm not very good with it as yet, but i really enjoy messing with it.

I have a bottle of Mod Podge, and several sets of tile coasters to show for it. that's about all the decoupage I've ever done, but as it is incredibly easy I'm sure I'll do more eventually.

Let me see... I assembled most of the supplies but never did much with candle making, and I have begun the long treacherous slide into "learning how to work the sewing machine." That will eventually turn into interesting projects, I am certain.

My latest obsession has been bookbinding. I truly enjoy turning paper, thread, glue, and leather into a usable little book. I've always been fascinated with books, so it's somewhat surprising that it took me 30 years to learn how to make them.

If you've read through all that, I am impressed.

About Me

Hi! I'm Kristen, it's a pleasure to meet you!

I'm barely 31, married, 1 daughter, and I live in Tennessee. I'm not the girliest crayon in the box...

My favorite color is burgundy, and that's the only color on the warm side of the spectrum that grabs me. Everything else that makes me say "ooo, pretty color!" is on the cool side; most of my wardrobe is in blues and purples. Teal is gorgeous. I also tend to prefer the darker jewel tones, and I stay away from pink.

I have a small collection of gargoyles and dragons. Gargoyles have always fascinated me, as has the fact that scholars can never fully agree on their original purpose.

I spend way too much time on the internet, and read too many webcomics (Something Positive, Questionable Content, Freefall, xkcd, the Phoenix Requiem, Dominic Deegan, et cetera)

I don't wear makeup, and I do wear glasses.

I spent most of my childhood making music by way of piano, violin, oboe, and mallet percussion. I still play oboe occasionally.

I have two tortoiseshell cats that very graciously allow me to live in their vicinity. I run a MacBook, drive a VW Beetle, and dye my hair very dark red.

Favorite Television

I don't watch much TV. I know it's un-American, but I don't. I'll sit through whatever my family has going, and often enjoy it, but I never seem to watch anything when left to my own devices. That said, the ones I actually pay attention to are Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs, the British version of Top Gear, and whatever anime is running (Fullmetal Alchemist, Rurouni Kenshin, and Ghost in the Shell are my favorites there)

Ratings

I will always rate. Promise. However, I am occasionally horrible at remembering to do so promptly... so if you're pretty sure I've gotten your swap and I've not rated you, PLEASE drop me a note. Otherwise, it'll still get done, just might take a while.

Please Don't Send

-earrings. my ears get infected every time I try to wear them, so I don't.
