Bizarre Botanicals #1 ~ Venus Flytrap

This is the companion series to dobie256’s bizarre animals swaps. The world of plants is full of covert warfare and subterfuge, hardly the passive world that we often imagine! In this series we will be focusing on the biological oddities of the plant kingdom.

Image must be standard ATC size and must be either illustrated or utilize any printmaking technique.

Wikipedia: The Venus Flytrap, Dionaea muscipula, is a carnivorous plant that catches and digests animal prey—mostly insects and arachnids. Its trapping structure is formed by the terminal portion of each of the plant's leaves and is triggered by tiny hairs on their inner surfaces. When an insect or spider crawling along the leaves contacts a hair, the trap closes if a different hair is contacted within twenty seconds of the first strike. The requirement of redundant triggering in this mechanism serves as a safeguard against a waste of energy in trapping objects with no nutritional value. The plant's common name refers to Venus, the Roman goddess of love it is found natively only in North and South Carolina in the United States, specifically within a 60-mile radius of Wilmington, North Carolina

Specifics: •1 ATC for 1 Partner •Illustrations or print-making method of choice. Originals only please. •Card backside should include artist's information, title, & date. •Theme: Venus Flytrap •4.9+, no unexplained 3s or 1s

I hope you can join :)

I'm not an ATC gal--I do postcards--so I can't participate :( BUT I highly recommend the Corpse Flower aka Titan Arum Amorphophallus titanum as a fun (huge & stinky!) bizarre botanical.

ATCs aren't that different from postcards!! But thanks for the tip.

FiWebster 03/ 4/2011 #

Oh, I beg to differ. =smile= The difference between ATCs and postcards is that ATCs have to be one definite size, whereas postcards can be anywhere from 3.5" x 5" to 6.125" x 11.5". That not only gives you a larger canvas for creation, it gives you lots of flexibility re. composition & cropping. (I do plan to host some PC swaps here...=laugh=)

Ah I see. I thought postcards were all one size. I hope you know I was joking anyway :)

Please note:I pushed back the sign-up and due dates by 1 week. Thanks

Ghost orchids!! Not sure if they are bizarre enough, but they are sure interesting :) Pitcher plants are pretty neat also.

Thanks for the tips. I'll wait to see how many people join this one before I decide whether I'll be continuing

bluemonkeymama 03/25/2011 #
