Description:

We love children's literature and all those books that are destined to be classics. But aren't there less...weighty books that keep you up at night, too?

You are invited to send a postcard to your partner listing a few of your favorite children's/YA guilty pleasures. Please list at least 2 - 3 books or series and describe what made them so compelling to you. This subject is open to interpretation, so if you feel it's a guilty pleasure, we'll call it a guilty pleasure! Generally speaking, though, think books that have no chance at all of being nominated for a Newbery Medal. ;)

Postcards should be sent naked and stamped, are sender's choice, do not specifically need to fit the written theme, and can be store-bought, handmade, clean-thrifted, or vintage. (But please--do try to send something nice.) You will send 2 postcards with recommendations and receive two cards in return, perhaps with ideas for new books to read or favorites to re-visit!

haha I like this one! I was just thinking about my guilty pleasures recently, and considered going back to re-read a few!

Love this!!! Will be fun to see how folks interpret "guilty pleasures!" :)

Well. It's not an accident that this swap comes on the heels of my reading 20 YA books in the last week. ;) I can't wait to see what people are reading under the covers, too.

ohpossum 01/16/2011 #

that book cover is PRICELESS! Back in the 80's/90's I worked in an independent bookstore and when we "stripped" books for disposal, I took those YA books home and read 'em!

Hah @ohpossum ! One of the many bonuses of working for a bookstore...I really miss all the access.

I didn't read that many SVH books, but the one pictured above was my absolute favorite as a teenager. I remember being so shocked that such bad things could happen in Sweet Valley. I got myself a secondhand copy again a couple of years ago. This isn't one of my official picks for my postcard, so I thought it'd be fun to use it for the swap photo. :)

I ran across a blog where the blogger was re-reading them. To get through it, she decided to play a drinking game. Doing shots when ever the "perfect size 4," or some other reference to the girls were made. It was kind of funny. I don't know how long she continued that game :P

From what I recall PP, if that blogger took a shot every time a reference was made to "blue-green eyes" or "sun-streaked hair," she'd probably pass out within half a book. ;)

Same here, honeybee, I only remember reading a couple of particular Sweet Valleys, one dealt with the history of the girls' family... like there were always twins in their lineage and it followed them down through the generations - omg, I was in my 20's and married but I DID read a couple of them. and I remember another one where it was a "Christmas Carol" type thing, the slightly nastier twin visited by dreams where she was no longer POPULAR! har har har!

thehappyhoneybee 01/26/2011 #

No longer POPULAR. Bite your tongue!

Okay, I just finished a series of six books in one day which is totally going on the postcard. That is the mark of a true guilty pleasure.

Do you have a link to that blog PP? Sounds hilarious

ohpossum I think I remember reading the "Christmas Carol" one!
