Description:

This swap was originally done by @Doulton but I have PM'd her and asked her permission to run it again as well as copy/paste her original text. She has given permission, so here it goes!

You will send a letter to two partners but you will be under some constraints.

First, select a book. It can be any book. You can select it at random or choose your favorite book. It should be at least 200 pages long. It should be in English. You might not want to use a mathematics textbook.

Secondly, turn to page 22 and write out the first five nouns you find. Skip ahead to avoid repeats. Feel free to use proper nouns if you like. You may use or omit pronouns.

Thirdly, turn to page 87 and write out the first five verbs you find. Make sure that they are all different.

Next, turn to page 171 and write out the first five adjectives and/or adverbs you find.

When you do this, go ahead to the following pages if you need to.

Next, go to the copyright page and note the name of the city. If you find more than one city, select the one that pleases you most. Finally write down the first name of the author.

You now have a place name, a person's name plus your five nouns, five verbs, and five adjectives or adverbs. I recommend that you write them all down and then use them to write a letter to your match.

Make sure that the letter is about you. You might have to use your imagination to fit in some of these nouns and verbs. You might have to stretch the truth. This is partly creative writing and partly an informative letter. It's a mix of fact and fiction.

Make sure that you write at least two paragraphs. You may use the word processor or write by hand. Word processing might make it easier.

This is a chance to exercise your creativity but to have a "word hoard" that you must integrate into your letter.

Questions? Ready, steady, go!

You can obviously start on this ahead of time, at least picking out your words and starting to formulate your letter.

The first time I did this, I actually went through 5 books, listing all the words and then I picked the book I thought would make the most interesting letter. Just an idea. :)

A question from the previous swap: You are sending the same letter to both your partners. So, you'll just have to write one letter and then copy it for the second partner.

Can we write two different ones if we want to? I think it would be more fun :)

Absolutely!
