Bluework #4

--Bluework embroidery on a 5รขโ‚ฌย square

-only one blue color thread per block

-senders choice of theme

Simple outline or line drawing images are best, (as in a coloring book) and you can do them in just a stem stitch, or combination of stitches, or cross-stitch, as long as you only use one color of blue in each block.

The square is to be a 5" square of good quality 100% cotton fabric in white or pale cream, and the image should only fill a 4 x 4 area in the center leaving a blank border area of approximately one inch.

Wash your fabric before embroidering, press it after and keep the stitches neat. Package it in a zip-loc or similar baggie, slipped between two pieces of cardboard, chipboard, etc to keep it protected. Tape your envelope wellรขโ‚ฌโ€donรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt let the post office machinery ruin your efforts.

Can this be done with machine embroidery or does it have to be done by hand?

Emika 01/ 3/2011 #

5" finished or 5" cut?

perkl8r 01/ 3/2011 #

after you embroider the picture you center the picture and cut the fabric to a 5" piece - after embroidering you should have at the least a 1/2" seam allowance all the way around the picture.

end user can assemble these embroidered blocks in any format they want --- senders embroider the picture, recipients use the quilt block as they see fit

5" finished block = finished as in you've finished embroidering the center picture...that's all.....no quilting needed....embroider the block, cut the piece to 5", iron, package and mail.....end users ENJOY!

machine embroidery is ok but originally this series of swaps was set up with hand embroidery work in mind....I'd say it would be up to your partners...if they won't mind beautiful machine embroidery that is fine....my own preferance would be hand embroidery...to me there is something wonderful about the human touch when creating embroidered blocks...both in beauty and the time it takes to make a block.

I am back! I missed clicking the "I sent" button on this swap even though I thought I had because I've been away from swap-bot dealing with the illness and passing of my mother.

Please be patient with me as I get back on track and things all caught up.

Thank you! Dottie
