Swap Coordinator:SaraswatiChB (contact)
Swap categories: Miscellaneous  Newbie  Email
Number of people in swap:22
Location:International
Type:Type 1: Electronic
Last day to signup/drop:March 21, 2010
Date items must be sent by:April 12, 2010
Number of swap partners:6
Description:

This is an interesting experiment (and my first hosted swap so please be gentle with me). I hope it hasn't been run before.

EDITED: If you send a copy to my email address, I'll tell you where I post all results. I will put them online anonymously so that everybody can see all the other people's answers.

Swap requirements:

There will only be one swapper from each country (post your country in the comments). You will send the same email to 6 people that contains:

  • a description of what you eat for breakfast
  • a short description of a typical work day
  • a description of your favorite day off (weekend or holiday)
  • a short description of your country and its position in the world, including something you like about it and something you don't like
  • a list of languages (optional: dialects) that are spoken in your country

Also please pick three or more of these:

  • a description of the most common ethnic minorities in your country and how they are viewed
  • a list of the three most important holidays of your country and how they are cebrated.
  • description of some national specialties/products
  • a description of the role of men and women in your country
  • a famous person from your country and what she/he is famous for
  • a type of craft that is typical for your country (doesn't have to be typical ONLY for your country)
  • the role of religion in your country

Tell me if you think I've forgotten interesting aspects in the comments. If you are disappointed that your country is already taken, just wait, I will run it again and I will let different people in each time (the only exception if you are the only one signing up for your country). I will also allow one angel entry per country. Don't sign up, just leave a comment below. Example:

Lisa83 (signed up): Taiwan

Cuteasabutton89: ANGEL Taiwan

Important:

This is a swap for cultural understanding. That means please don't sign up if you are a) easily offended or b) like to piss people off ;-) Be mindful about other perspectives and remember that you might be paired with somebody from a country that is at war with yours or has a high level of state propaganda and censorship (and don't assume yours hasn't...). This is why I would discourage any further contact between participants apart from purely positive friendship or penpal request. Don't go spamming someone because you didn't like their country or their answers (or there will be consequences)!

Swap rules:

Please give fives even for short sentences that meet the swap-requirements. You can go for hearts for detailed descriptions, recipes, photos, links, etc. Newbies with filled out profiles are fine, however, they must have at least one email swap completed. Although there might be angels for your country, please don't flake. I reserve the right to ban people with suspicious profiles.

Germany.

Such an interesting swap! Good idea, @SaraswatiChB I'm from the USA so I'm sure you'll have many participants. I'll sign up another time since this is not the best timing for me.

Emkay 03/ 4/2010 #

Interesting swap, but since you as the host will always cover Germany, I can't join :(

Semechka 03/ 4/2010 #

Simone 03/ 4/2010 #

South African living in Northern Ireland for last 20months

SaraswatiChB 03/ 4/2010 #

@Simone I guess then you'd better start for South Africa, there won't be that many competitors...

I think We can separate Northern Ireland, England and Scotland if there are people interested in joining.

hollycm6 03/ 4/2010 #

This is a fun idea. I will do one sometime if you keep doing them. Maybe you should just have like 10 or 12 participants, and have everyone be partners? If I were in it I would really want to hear everyone's answers.

fii 03/ 4/2010 #

elblack 03/ 4/2010 #

Great idea and I think that hollycm6 idea is really good to be everybody's partner. :) And I'm covering Poland ;)

SaraswatiChB 03/ 4/2010 #

Hollycm6's idea was good, except that I cannot limit the number of participants. It is just not a possible function in the swap-bot bot... That means you'd have as many messages in your inbox as there are participants. And you would have to rate them all... I can increase the number of partners if everybody agrees so you're not suddenly swamped by a gazillion of mails you need to rate. If it stays this size, I'm perfectly happy to make it into one big group. If it gets bigger we can still divide the group. Best thing would be if you post the number of emails you'd like to receive as a max. I'll take the smallest number (bigger than 6) and we'll use that (as long as it works with the total number. I hope that is to everybody's satisfaction. Otherwise I can still offer that we find a place on the web to post all of the answers (perferably completely anonymous) so you can read all of them without having to rate each and everyone.
