Description:

Voodoo Doll

I have this strange obsession for voodoo dolls and all that is voodoo. I thought how could I make this a swap? With a helpful nudge from KateyB, this swap* was born.

Let's make voodoo dolls!! I know some of us on here are very serious about these items and others love the thought of having a silly voodoo doll laying around.

For this swap you'll be assigned one partner & we'll be makin' one voodoo doll(minimum height 5 inches). The style or material you use is all up to the you! Fabric, felt or any other material(except paper! we're not making paper dolls) can be used.

You'll then send other voodoo-esque items - bought or handmade. The minimum dollar value of the entire swap is $10 USD before postage.

Think Marie Laveau, gris-gris bags, incense, candles, make up your own spell =D ...the ideas are endless I say.

Pesky Details:

  1. Ratings above 4.5. A newbie looking to join? Please PM me and we'll talk.
  2. I can and may ban people who are no-senders. Special situation? Let me know and we'll see what we can do. Note: I will ban any dodgy swappers!! If you know of someone that needs to be looked at more closely, please let me know. I ban after the sign-up date.
  3. INTERNATIONAL - Yes my first one, so please be gentle ;P
  4. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

Remember, it's all in good fun! Please send a nice voodoo package, one that you would want to receive. Let's place a smile on your partner's face.

Cheers! =D

I'm in! Oh man, I'm so excited. I've never sewn a doll before so this will be a little experimental, but I'll practice. Great idea, RudeNun!

RudeNun 07/ 9/2007 #

I'm so glad you're in on this one!! I wasn't sure if you'd dig it..

babysingsing 07/ 9/2007 #

I dig it!

CajunLady 07/ 9/2007 #

yay...I just made one for a fellow swapper here. And it took me all of 5-6 hours to make, so I can do another one!!

RudeNun 07/ 9/2007 #

I'm glad I'm not the only one into this.. ;D

GiddyUpSoldier 07/ 9/2007 #

I just got the magazine craft that had the pattern to make a voodoo doll, and I'm on the bus to the mall to buy fabric to make some! Not gonna join the swap though since my rating is too low, and I want to make sure I can do it before I swap with someone. Have fun guys and great swap idea.

artbymia 07/ 9/2007 #

Hellz Yeah!!! I love VooDoo Dolls!!! Right up my Dark Alley!! Can't wait to see what will be in my little Voodoo package :) I know the person i have to send to will be SMILEN!

kateyb 07/ 9/2007 #

TíaBel 07/ 9/2007 #

I tried it once. Well, almost tried it. I was in college and my friend wanted to cast a love spell on someone so I helped her research it. Found a spell book at the library, bought all the ingredients, rented "The Serpent and the Rainbow" that night ... dumped everything in the garbage and ran my a** to confession the next day.

So, yeah, I'm in!

RudeNun 07/ 9/2007 #

I remember when I was in grade school, I would get one of my friends to lay down flat on the floor. I would then get a third friend to help me lift the person. We'd place two fingers underneath her and we'd chant, "light as a feather, stiff as a board."

SacredYoli 07/10/2007 #

I'm scurrrrrrrrred, but I am always down for a challange.

yowell 07/10/2007 #

ooh..ooh..this sounds like fun..always been fascinated by voodoo, a bit dubious about it too. i made a voodoo brooch a short while back, might do another one for my swap..would this be acceptable? :)

RudeNun 07/10/2007 #

sacred it's all in a positive light :) I thought the same about using it negatively...now that's some escary chet! Glad you joined mujer!

yowell most definitely! The one thing that is required in the package is the voodoo doll, everything else can be what you would like, as long as it's voodoo-esque items :D

babysingsing 07/10/2007 #

If there's anyone who signs up but doesn't send his/her package for this swap, WATCH OUT!

Heh heh heh.

RudeNun 07/10/2007 #

:O

LOL!!

kateyb 07/10/2007 #

right!!! :)

TíaBel 07/10/2007 #

LOL! Just got a mental picture of a "Bad Swapper" voodoo doll - tarred, feathered, and bedazzled.

babysingsing 07/10/2007 #

She'd have to come with her own Barbie Dream Post Office and Delivery Confirmation sheets!

Back to work. Time to stop making nerdy Swap-bot jokes.

Kelli 07/10/2007 #

I'm a bit scared to do this. No one would put pins in me would they? I know a bit about voodoo so I'm a little nervous but... ok...I'll do it!

TíaBel 07/11/2007 #

Have you read the Google Ads on this page? Wow!

babysingsing 07/11/2007 #

Ha haaa, I love "Guarantee Voodoo Spells."

SacredYoli 07/11/2007 #

Well if anyone can give me some "voodoo" pointers, that would be cool. I don't know a thing. I was just going to send in a barbie with her head shopped off, and call it a day.

But I see here there may be some guidlines?

(I kid about the barbie, ain't no one gonna shank my girl!)

user6532 07/12/2007 #

Ok maybe I can help...When you make the doll, you should talk to it and tell it of all the wonderfu; things you want it to do. In the filling put wonderful things like sweet heerbs and spices, maybe lavender or rosepetals, if you dont have those on hand use a little essential oil that smells yummy and happy. You can put in crystals, money, rolled up papers with nice wishes on them for your partner. One of my favorite things to put in a doll is peppermint and other lucky things. And be sure to say a few prayers for her and her work and her arrival. Good Luck

artbymia 07/12/2007 #

Those are all wonderful ideas. I also like to add some religious metals for good luck and blessings, ribbons, stones and feathers are fun things to add as well.

RudeNun 07/12/2007 #

Wow! Thank you for answering sacred's question, those are great ideas too!

SacredYoli 07/12/2007 #

Awwwwwwwwwwww, that sounds so purrdy and romantical.

I am really going to get into this one.

Yay.

citizenblue 07/12/2007 #

apparently i only learned how to read 5 minutes ago when i finally saw your message about this!

OMG!! i so want to join this, but i don't know if i have the time!! great idea, though! if this goes again, i might have to join next time.

JustAnotherMaria 07/12/2007 #

This looks fun and I needs me some fun right now. Never made one of these but I've already got the image in my head. Sounds like funnn ruka. ; )

RudeNun 07/12/2007 #

sacred, I know your voodoo doll will come with a blingin' tanga(thong) and pair of pasties...you'll be telling her risque jokes and showing her all those nasteeee comments that you put on my Myspace account ;)

Hmmm a puta voodoo doll sounds really good right now.. LOL!

Glad you decided to stick this one out sacred!

strumpfkunst 07/13/2007 #

Honestly, cannot wait to get assigned my partner and start cracking.... I don't want to start now without knowing what that person likes - but I might just make one voodoo doll for practice. :)

SacredYoli 07/14/2007 #

Pshhhhhhhhhhh, who doesn't love a good Puta?

TíaBel 07/19/2007 #

LOL!

megalodon 07/21/2007 #

Dammit! I missed the signup date by a day! Can I still join?

SacredYoli 07/22/2007 #

Hey, I just ordered some magical herbs from ebay for my gris-gris baggy!

I'll hold off on the bodily fluids though!

RudeNun 07/23/2007 #

Sacred: Eyyyyy ;P

I can't decide what to do my gris gris bag for. The possibilities are endless!

DazzleGuts 07/23/2007 #

I have a partner in Scotland and the postage will be high. I was hoping to find a way of sending the doll and stuffing as a kit so I can still send a flat envelope, but it sounds like it's important to stuff the doll yourself. Thoughts on this anyone?

RudeNun 07/23/2007 #

It's completely up to the person you're sending to. I'd PM them.

artbymia 07/24/2007 #

I just sent out my Doll along with a little something extra. I Loved this idea and hope my Swappie Mami will be happy with the surprise.

I was thinking of hosting a swap myself. It will be a prayer pouch. 5 x 5 it can be beaded, stenciled, hand sewn, fabric, leather, painted, covered with religious medals, etc. the concept of the prayer pouch is nothing new, and in fact, has its origins in Africa. Historically, African amulets were pouches of leather (sometimes cloth) and filled with written words of empowerment, or sacred prayers. The pouches were then sealed to prevent the writings from being read, giving power to the mere presence of the written word. Within the pouches we have two worlds, the physical (the pouch itself) and the spiritual (the hope, prayer, wish, or dream). These amulets were carried, and sometimes worn on the clothing of the Africans.

Let me know what you think and if anyone is interested. I never hosted before so wanted some feedback. Don't go and steal my idea and make it your own, becuase i will have my Cholas run up on you, lol :)

Mia

LOLA 07/24/2007 #

MAMAMIA I think your idea is a very good one. The power of the written word is real. I have always thought the phrase Sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me was bogus. How wonderful to use affirming words and quotations and contain them in a prayer pouch. It would be a great tool to counter the affects of negativism and abuse imposed by others or even by ourselves. I know my own feelings of self-doubt and fear are very counterproductive and I would love to have a little pouch with positive beautiful words and phrases to help me get through whatever challenge. I love my rosaries, the Virgin Mary, milagros and my baby saints but surely we could customize a prayer bag based on our swap-partner's beliefs. I think it would be a healthy, fun, and empowering craft to exchange. For the record I need some time to collect things for my partners but if I have enough time I would love to participate. I won't steal your idea either so you can keep your Cholas away from me!or else I could line up my voodoo dolls and tell them to keep away and relax! I'm on your side! Regards, Lola

user6532 07/25/2007 #

Kimbeewa, your doll is on the way!! Let me know when he arrives!! Mariah

artbymia 07/25/2007 #

Lola, Thank you for your lovely comments You ROCK! I love your deep thoughts and appreciation for the arts! I am thinking of doing this in 2 weeks to give everyone some time to gather some things.

I will call off the Cholas, lol, but maybe our Voodoo dolls can hang together some time :) if they don't already, Boo! Spooky, Creepy and kind of Freaky.

Check out my other sites and become a friend.

Much love, Mia

TíaBel 08/ 3/2007 #

TeamWang, voodoo coming your way!

DazzleGuts 08/ 4/2007 #

Sacredsnatch, I just took a peek at the voodoo package you are sending me. You really went all out! I can hardly wait to receive the package. Since my parents were just here visiting with us, I am just starting on my doll now, but I have been putting together the materials I will use for the past 2 weeks. Seeing the quality of the other dolls people are making is inspiring, so I may make more dolls after this.

DazzleGuts 08/ 4/2007 #

Yowell, as you can see from the message above, I will probably be working on my package right to the last minute. I will try to post an image of it before it goes in the mail.

yowell 08/ 5/2007 #

I've upload a picture of the package for babysinsing but it's turned out HUGE...don't know what i've done sorry!!

eonsmomma 08/ 6/2007 #

My doll is done, just need to get a couple other things. I will post pics of her tonight.

JustAnotherMaria 08/ 6/2007 #

Had a hard time figuring out exactly how I wanted to do this one...but I've got the idea now. Soooo...to my swap partner melissa michael aka craftersbag...I probably won't get the doll mailed out until the very last moment! But if she comes out like I'm hoping, she should be very cute. ; )

eonsmomma 08/ 6/2007 #

Mine is in my flickr gallery. I am working on a little spell book to go with her.

babysingsing 08/ 7/2007 #

WOW! I received my AMAZING voodoo doll from yowell today! I love it -- she's so lovely and sweet-smelling! Our whole apartment smells like your garden now! Wow!

babysingsing 08/ 7/2007 #

Voodoo Man (am I the only one whose voodoo doll is male?) out to Mere tomorrow morning!

Pictures here.

He only looks cranky. He's just a little nervous. He's never traveled before. I promise he'll love you and bring good energy into your life, Mere.

RudeNun 08/ 9/2007 #

Cherriza your voodoo doll and shrine are on their way!

earthnk 08/10/2007 #

Kelli in Tasmania, Your doll package has been shipped! Yea!!!

JustAnotherMaria 08/13/2007 #

Mrs. Winslow is on her way to her new home with craftersbag aka Melissa. She's not a "traditional" voodoo doll, she's more of my own interpretation of a voodoo woman from my childhood. But she was all hand made with a lot of care. Hope you like her!

strumpfkunst 08/17/2007 #

@ smartcakes - I am so, so sorry... my boyfriend just admitted to having forgotten to mail the package, he's been driving it around in his car for ages. I will get it to the post office tomorrow (personally) and it should be there end of the week. Again, I am soryy!

eonsmomma 08/23/2007 #

Still haven'r rec'd my dol l:(

earthnk 08/27/2007 #
