Description:

One of the most fun ways to use mail, I've found, is to share culture and learn about the culture of others. For this swap, we will share a bit about the folk tales passed down in our families via art and writing.

You will create one ATC for one partner featuring a creature or tale passed down through your family. Maybe it's from a story in your culture, maybe it's from the culture of an area you moved to (or the old country!), or maybe your family has their own personal ghost (or other such being who isn't documented in widely known stories) based on experiences they've had -- something that watches over them, or something that is... a bit more sinister. This is pretty open-ended, and I encourage you to share whatever you like with no worry about being judged.

Then, write a short letter about what you've depicted. What is it called, what does it do, where did the story originate, etc etc. Please write at least 4 - 5 sentences, but more than that is certainly welcome. Because your partner is going to be someone interested in folk tales and culture, feel free to include other stories, superstitions, etc -- anything you'd like to learn about someone else! Be sure to include relevant details about your family if necessary.

Swap is international and I'd love if people from multiple countries participated! If you send extras, please make sure your envelope is still under an ounce and won't need any kind of customs form -- some countries require the recipient pay again for something that has gone through customs even if it was sent with appropriate postage, and that's not really the fun surprise we're going for here. BUT, if you're in the US and like this swap, check out Monsters, Myths, & Legends -- US ATC Swappers! for more swaps and forum fun!

Swap Rules

  • 1 ATC to 1 partner. An ATC is a piece of art on a 2.5" x 3.5" sturdy backing, typically sent in a protective sleeve. Usually the art is done with portrait (vertical) orientation, but horizontal is acceptable as well for this swap. Write the swap name, your name, your username, and the date on the back. Sign for extra flourish. If you've never made an ATC before, you may join... just message me if you need anything explained!

  • You may use any medium for the ATC (drawing, watercolor, mixed media, etc), but please take time and make something you'd like to receive. Don't just slap on a handful of premade elements and call it a day, especially because this swap is so personal! Be mindful of 3D elements and protecting them during shipping if you choose to use any. This is open to beginner artists, so don't worry about not being good enough as long as you try!

  • 1 letter about your ATC subject, minimum 4 - 5 sentences. No maximum limit. Other stories, stuff like superstitions, etc are welcome additions once you've met the requirements! Letter may be typed or handwritten. I recommend using a notecard because it provides some ATC protection, but you can use plain paper or stationery if you'd like.

  • 3 weeks to complete. Send on time, rate promptly and fairly (5 if it meets requirements and was sent on time -- hearts not required, but are a great way to let your partner know you appreciated their effort!).

  • If you have fewer than 10 rated type 2 or 3 swaps or anything questionable on your profile, please message me when joining. No unexplained or recent 1's or 3's. I reserve the right to ban at my discretion. I am an active host, so don't be shocked if you hear from me -- but I'm nice, I swear.

  • I will angel after you have communicated with your partner and rated a 1 (if necessary). Please be patient and check your partner's country -- some countries occasionally take over 3 months to arrive to the US and vice versa, to give some idea. I do message people who don't mark as sent.

  • Have fun! If I find out you didn't have fun, I will ban you from all future swaps (just kidding).

Big thanks to @teacupsandcandlesticks for the swap idea! Swap picture is Domovoi in her honor. :)
