Description:

Let's do it again, readers!!!

This swap is for people who love to read and would like to both keep track of what they've read and share their lists with two other readers and/or bibliophiles. We had a successful run for 2008 and I've had requests to do it again.

You'll be sending your partners a reading log that contains your thoughts on all the books you read in January, February and March 2009. The log can be in any paper format.

It doesn't matter what you read: fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, Manga, zines, audio books, e-books, children's, etc. You just need to jot down the title, the author and give a minimum of a one paragraph description about the book and your thoughts. You can feel free to include things like favorite quotes, the author's Web site, etc. Whatever you want to say about the book.

There will be four swaps throughout the year (one posted each quarter). You can join one or all. For 2008, there were 11 people who participated for the whole year.

I recommend keeping a computer file for your log so it will be easy for your partners to read and so you won't lose it, but your log can be created in ANY format you like. It needs to be paper and mailed via post. It can be as simple as a piece of notebook paper, a mini-journal, a letter, a zine, a quarter-fold newsletter, etc. The format is up to you.

The details:

a) international (sent via the post, NOT e-mailed)

b) two partners

c) minimum requirements: one book each month; one paragraph about the book. Author, title.

Voracious readers, like your host, read more than a single book a month. :) And since you're considering this swap, you probably read more than one as well! So there's no maximum. If you read it in January, list it under that month in your log, and so on.

The fine print:

Newbies welcome. Rated players need a 4.8 or higher. All participants must have a completed profile. I ban after the swap closes. As both a swap participant and coordinator, I like people to have positive swap experiences, so please no forum drama.

WooHoo! I'm so happy to see this up for 2009! :) I missed the first 2 quarters last year... not gonna happen this year though! HeeHee! :)

Artistic 12/22/2008 #

Welcome, Jeanland. :)

Thanks for your kind thoughts in regards to my Movie log swap. I've got it set up now. It is at http://www.swap-bot.com/swap/show/27567. There are only 8 people signed up so far but its a start! Thanks for showing me the way!

rnlaughalot 12/26/2008 #

This sounds like fun and I would love to know what others are reading as I might want to read it as well.

alteredtome 12/26/2008 #

I have wanted to keep track of what I read in a year and never have. This will give me the accountability to do just that. Can't wait to see what everyone else is reading and their take on the same books I read. Have just set up my log on my computer so I am ready to go. Now to pick that first book of 2009 to read!

muincat 12/27/2008 #

I feel exactly the same as @alteredtome I used to read all the time, but I've had difficulty concentrating because of depression and stress from my divorce. If I know people are EXPECTING me to read, maybe it will light a fire under my butt to get it done! :-) Gonna go check out that movie one, too...

AnitraF 12/29/2008 #

Ye gods! Track all the books I read? (Hint - I read two yesterday .... . Finished one, read a second, started a third - which I've almost finished!!)

OK. I'll give it a try .....

foovay 12/29/2008 #

Yay AnitraF - you convinced me to join. I was hesitant because I often knock out two or three books in a weekend, and usually have two or three going at any given time. People sometimes don't believe I can read that much and act like I am lying (including one of my local librarians - she is SURE I can't be reading everything I take home - LOL). Now that I see I'm not alone in being a voracious reader, I'll give it a try!

BTW - my husband is a data base whiz - so I'll probably have him set me up a date base for this swap. If anyone is interested, message me and we'll figure out how he can send the set up to anyone who wants it.

kitty4peace 12/29/2008 #

LOL... my librarian told me that I should stop checking out so many books because she didn't think I was reading them either. Made a big deal about it every couple of days...I work within walking distance of the library so I make a lot of trips.

This sounds like fun guys!

melissableuz 12/30/2008 #

Yes, one of my fav hangouts is the library..heh heh..Just want to make sure we do not review audio books, right? I usually listen to the lighter books while I'm on the computer. Will we be sent reminders?

thanks, mel

kgeslab 12/31/2008 #

This was the best swap I did last year! Thanks artistic for hosting again. I see you've made the top 10 list!

Artistic 12/31/2008 #

Welcome to all! And for those who have librarians doubting their reading, shame on those library workers. I believe you. That's because I usually have four or five books going at a time. :) You'll find lots of voracious readers in this reading log swap. Happy reading.

teddykana 01/ 3/2009 #

I'm joining! This is going to be my first swap so I hope that will be fine. I just borrowed four books today [one of them I returned already since it wasn't interesting at all]. I always just pick out books by the cover though, so I hope I can get some good recommendations from other readers, thanks!

tkoufus 01/ 4/2009 #

hey guys as a library assistant i applaud your healthy appetites for reading. i know several borrwers at my library who read 2-3 books a day so i dont doubt for one minute that you are reading them either!!!! go for it!.

burrum 01/ 4/2009 #

This is my kind of swap, as I admit to being a bookaholic and love reading. I have participated in reading challenges on the Net, and also run a small book group. I really will enjoy this swap.

paflip25 01/ 7/2009 #

I was thinking about making a separate list for the books that I read to my boys. I read over 4 dozen different ones a month (on average) and was thinking that some people (without kids) might not care to read my reviews on those. So, therefore, wouldn't want them mixed in with my adult books. . . Anyone's feedback on this idea would be great. . .

crayolaskiies 01/ 8/2009 #

would you consider making an email version of this swap?

moxsapphir 01/ 8/2009 #

I keep just such a book list/journal. I have for 4-5 years now. Why not! :)

Artistic 01/ 9/2009 #

Paflip25: The idea is to include whatever you read. You can make it a separate section if you want to. But the swap is about your reading. And who knows, you may be partnered with someone who has kids, or a teacher, or someone interested in reading/writing children's books.

Artistic 01/ 9/2009 #

Crayolaskiies: This swap is via post.

You can do a search under the e-mail category of swaps to find book-related e-mail swaps.

AnitraF 01/10/2009 #

I read children's books as well. I just started one. After the political philosophy I just finished, it's like ice cream after chili!

I'm writing my log in blog form - a chatty letter to a friend I haven't met yet. But a database is a good idea.

AnitraF 01/10/2009 #

crayolaskies: There is a 100 books list swap being conducted by email. Asking for a list of 100 books - not necessarily books read, can be 'want to read' or just 'from my bookshelf'. I'm in that, too ....

zanylady 01/14/2009 #

Hmm...I'd like to include audio books as I "read" them with my ears! There have been some good ones I'd like to pass along. I have two or three books going on at once and one or two are likely to be audio books.

Artistic 01/17/2009 #

Hi all: Today is the last day for sign-ups. I'll start reviewing profiles tomorrow, so it may be Monday before partners are assigned.

Artistic 01/17/2009 #

Zanylady: Audio is fine. I listen/read them too. :)

tkoufus 01/18/2009 #

ok do you have to complete teh book to use it in your reading log? i have started a few and they were not what i liked so didnt finish them. if i keep starting and stopping i will end up with no full book read. can you do the bits and pieces as well>?? just wondering. mostly for content i think mine will be young adult novels as working in the library right now i need to have a better feel for what they have in their collection there so i can do readers advisory. just did the travelling pants one. lots of fun.

Artistic 01/19/2009 #

Partners have been assigned. I'll be in touch as the swap progresses. Happy reading!

Artistic 01/31/2009 #

Greetings all:

I've gotten a few messages from swap participants confused about what is supposed to be sent to partners and when.

This reading log swap covers the period January, February and March 2009. You will keep a log of all the books you read during those three months. At the end of the period in March (on or before March 31), send via post a copy of your log to your partners.

You'll send ONE log that encompasses your three months of reading.

Artistic 03/20/2009 #

The second quarter swap has been posted.

We're in the homestretch for 1st quarter reading logs. Please get those in the mail to your partners by March 31.

Artistic 03/30/2009 #

Logs are en route to my partners in the U.S. and Australia. Enjoy!

AardvarkCakes 04/ 2/2009 #

Hi I have sent my log - had no internet access for a few days to be able to mark as sent - loving this swap! Thanks! hx

dimanche 04/ 5/2009 #

i totally forgot to hit send on this and another swap, but theyhave been sent. sorry!

Artistic 04/26/2009 #

Angel assignments to cover flakers will be sent out tomorrow. Thanks to all for your patience.

Artistic 04/30/2009 #

All of the angels have been launched for the Reading Log #1 Swap. In an odd twist, many of the people who volunteered to angel are folks who ended up being flaked on.

Thanks to all who participated by signing up, sending to and rating their partners.

Joy to you!
