Description:

Oooo another year long swap (after my US Presidents Swap). I must be insane! But these are fun and you aren't commited to every month, you can join on just those months you want to. Due in the month of January are the following states: ALABAMA, ALASKA, ARIZONA & ARKANSAS.

Each ATC must be 2 1/2 X 3 1/2" (standard playing card size). Made from a card, cardboard, or heavy paper stock - nothing flimsy (most you already know this).

Each card can be of any media, provided it took some time to make & is your own work. Something you'd be very happy to receive yourself.

Don't forget to provide your name, title of swap, swap-bot nickname, and date created on reverse. Also which State that card is.

You will have only one partner each month you participate. When we're through, if you stay from beginning to end, you'll have a set of all 50 US States.

No newbies, no persons with disparaging ratings (based on no sends, partial sends or habitual lateness), and you must courteouly rate those who have invested time in making ATCs for you. Also, this is a US Participants only swap (my first), but I want to keep the flow of these cards going. If you are not in the USA - I am sorry.

I don't want to put too many requirements on the cards themselves, that might inhibit your creativity, but do make certain that the artwork does in fact portray something "unique" to that state.

I really look forward to this swap! I hope you all will consider giving it a try!!!

For HEARTS consider stickers and ephermia, but also consider doing one of the United States' Commonwealths & Territories for a truly complete set: AMERICAN SAMOA, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, FEDERAL STATES OF MICRONESIA, GUAM, NORTH MARIANAS, PUERTO RICO, VIRGIN ISLANDS.

If we have one partner per month - ?? I am a little confused...that would only be 12 ATCs...Or how many do we send per month...I love this idea, but what is the commitment?

thanks

You have one partner for this swap due Jan 31. You will be mailing them (4) ATCs: Alaska, Arizona, Alabama & Arkansas. If you are going for hearts (some people send ephermea (stickers, papers, ribbon) or... you could send a bonus card of one of the USA's Commonwealths/territories (a 5th card), but for the "5" score (and to fulfill your obligation), you need only send ONE EACH of the four states starting with the letter "A" to your ONE partner. I hope I have clarified this. :D

Warning: Geography Professor on semester break

FSM (Micronesia) is no longer a dependency of the US. Since 1986 it has been a constitutional federation in free association with the US.

Here is what I believe to be complete list of US dependent areas: American Samoa, Baker Island, Guam, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Midway Islands, Navassa Island, Northern Mariana Islands, Palmyra Atoll, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Wake Island.

My first set is also ready. LOL, you'll never guess where I got that list LMM, our goverment tax dollars hard at work! Let me take a look at 2 more sites & make the best list. Why are some of yours individual islands & not groups/chains? After I sort this out I will print the links here.

I took this from the CIA Factbook entry for the United States. It's under the "Government" section. These are our dependent territories (in addition to the 50 states and the District of Columbia).

Midway Islands and the Northern Marianas are considered single political entities (like Alaska or Hawaii...fragmented but one "place").

I could get into the different kinds of relationships each of these places has with the US but you really don't want a school lesson.

Whatever list of "extra" places you want to provide is fine...its your swap!

moxsapphir 12/15/2008 #

This is from Wikipedia (not the first place I got the list though, it was a goverment site). I think the reason they were not on my initial list, is because some of these territories are considered "uninhabited"

TAKEN FROM WIKIPEDIA UNDER US TERRITORIES Unincorporated unorganized territories American Samoa, technically unorganized, but self-governing under a constitution last revised in 1967 Baker Island, uninhabited Howland Island, uninhabited Jarvis Island, uninhabited Johnston Atoll, uninhabited Kingman Reef, uninhabited Bajo Nuevo Bank, uninhabited Serranilla Bank, uninhabited Midway Islands, no indigenous inhabitants, currently included in the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge Navassa Island, uninhabited (claimed by Haiti) Wake Atoll consisting of Peale, Wake and Wilkes Islands[5], no indigenous inhabitants, only contractor personnel (claimed by the Marshall Islands)

But look, as far as I am concerned it's all still real estate, and if anyone had enough info on any of these to make a card reflecting the 'uniqueness' of that place I say, "It's all good!" One set of islands was purchased outright by The Nature Conservancy, so they are no longer owned by the USA but he charity itself. :) I learned a lot!

Okay, I know it's time to assign, but I sent out 2 inquires on 2 of those who signed up. When those reports get back I will assign everyone a partner. Hopefully sometime on Mon, Dec 22.
