Description:

QNT 2018 PRICKLY PINWHEELS

1-20-18 thru 2-12-18

--1 partner

--1 PRICKLY PINWHEEL to your partner

PRE-CUT FABRICS:

-*bright colored small print

 --cut FOUR 2 ½” X 2 ½” squares

--cut TWO 2 ½” by length of fabric strips

-WHITE or tone-on-tone white fabric

  --cut FOUR 2 ½” X 2 ½” squares

--cut TWO 2 ½” by length of fabric strips

PART 1 ASSEMBLY:

STEP 1: Take one bright colored square and a white strip and stitch on all four sides of the bright square creating an even white border around the bright colored square. Do this to all 4 bright colored squares.

STEP 2: Next take the 2 ½” X 2 ½” white squares and stitch a bright colored strip on all four sides. (reverse of STEP 1).

STEP 3: Press each block and square up any uneven sides. At this point you should have 4 blocks from STEP 1, and 4 blocks from STEP 2 for a total of 8 blocks.

CUTTING:

Cut each of the 8 blocks diagonally ONCE from the upper left-hand corner to the lower right-hand corner. Cut accurately. Only one cut to each block is needed to create the triangles we will use for PART 2 assembly.

PART 2 ASSEMBLY:

Match one triangle with a bright center to one triangle with a white center. Stitch (right sides together) along diagonal line ¼”. Press. Stitch FOUR sets of these making sure to offset them as shown in the picture on the swap. I would recommend laying them out as they should look when completed BEFORE you begin to sew.

You should end up with 2 PRICKLY PINWHEEL blocks. Keep one for yourself and send the other off to your partner. . *BRIGHT small print fabrics. These can be any small print fabric such as 1930’s prints, polka dots, stars, hearts, or any other print as long as it is a small one. Large prints and stripes will not work well for this block. Avoid dark prints such as black, brown, or navy, but fabrics with a little of these colors will be fine.

Questions and concerns are welcome. Please PM me or add them as comments below.

If we get enough interest we will do this swap each month.

I had so much fun making a pair of these using a larger sized center square and strips. They turned out great but used a lot of fabric. I decided to cut the sizes down from 3 ½ to 2 ½ inches and swap only one block the first round. I may increase the quantity for future rounds depending on response.

I can picture a beautiful scrappy quilt with an all-white background and lots of brightly colored PRICKLY PINWHEELS….who’s with me?

Swap-on!

This is a cute/fun block that I have not seen before. Plus I'm always looking for interesting things to do with my scrapes. Thanks for coming up with this swap.

I liked the block as soon as I saw it but fell in love with it when I made a sample. it is so fun to make, easy and so cute too! I made up the name, it could be called by something else but for our swap I liked the idea of a PRICKLY PINWHEEL. The little spikes in the centers reminded me of needles on a cactus so that is where the prickly part came in.

I just did my two blocks before actually joining--I had to trim my jellyroll strips to exactly 2.5"--they were all off by at least 1/8" and that seems to be the problem I've been having using these strips for other blocks. The small squares trimmed up to exactly 6" each, and the final size of both main blocks is 11 1/2" square. Is this how it's supposed to be?
