Evoke - To call out or summon...

What is evocative writing? Evocative writing is prose, an essay, fiction, or non-fiction wherein you evoke the feeling of something - but in this case, we will never specifically state what it is we're writing about. For instance, if I want to write a piece about the red barn that was once standing in a field (perhaps I have lovely memories of playing there), nowhere in the piece will I specifically state, "I have lovely memories of playing in the red barn that once stood in the field." Instead, I might say, "It stood tall in the golden grasses, the colour of a perfectly ripened apple but once inside another world opened up to us..." and write out your memories that way.

You can evoke a time, a place, a season, a colour, a scent, taste...whatever you like! The only catch is that you cannot, in the piece itself, specifically state what it is you're talking about. You want the reader to feel it rather than be told specifically about it.

Once you have your piece written, please enclose a brief note for your partner to read afterwards. In the note, tell them what prompted your piece ("When I was young, there was a red barn in the field out back that we would play in...").

If there is any confusion of if there are any questions about this description (or anything really!), please don't hesitate to comment or PM me. The only stupid question is the one never asked!

And now for the fine print....

The Administrative Details:

  • 1 evocative essay, prose, fiction, or creative non-fiction piece, and a note to your partner explaining what it is you were writing about, and what prompted it.

  • The essay, prose, fiction, or creative non-fiction piece must be typed. The note itself may be typed or handwritten.

  • 2 partners

  • The send date is about a month away. The topic is absolutely sender's choice so you can start writing now!

  • This is a type 3 swap because writing takes time and effort.

The Rules of the Road:

  • This swap is open to everyone so remember that we are not all at the same skill level. Do your very best and don't be afraid to share and shine!

  • Send on time.

  • Rate promptly. You may not rate down because you didn't like the piece, the topic, or you feel it wasn't up to your standard of "quality writing". Again, this is a safe space for all writers to share and grow.

Note: We will remove non-raters from the group if this becomes an issue (I don't expect that it will be). Hearts are at the discretion of the rater.

  • I certainly don't expect anyone to flake in this swap but if that does happen, please let me know after you rate a 1 and I will angel. Please note that anyone who flakes will be immediately removed from this group.

Is there a minimum of words/pages for this? I am finding it hard to write a very long piece evoking something! It tends to get more purple the longer it goes on :P

I'm so sorry! I only just saw this comment. There is no minimum word count required though I would expect more than a sentence from most people. ;)
