I thought I'd share this recent blog post from where I work about openings: https://www.awpwriter.org/magazinemedia/writersnotebookview/15/howto_open

Just creating a clicky link for the article @KateKintail linked to (seems markdown took the underscores literally): How to Open

Also want to say, that was an excellent article @KateKintail and great reminder that sometimes variety can be more enthralling than succumbing to a fashionable trend.

I also enjoyed reading the 15 first lines--seeing how each one gripped me (or didn't). It underscored the importance of that skillfully crafted opening because sometimes it will take more than a single sentence to rope a reader.

Thanks for the link and discussion. Feel free all to keep it up.

I thought some of the openings in the AWP piece were stronger than others. A couple of them didn't inspire me to read on or want more. Love the voice of the girl in 'Towelhead.' It sounds like a read that I'd prefer via audio. The first one about the execution would be one for hardback and a pot of tea.

I just read the sentences. Thanks, Artistic; all were thought-provoking. Also I loved the definition of flash fiction which I'll put in our other group swap Flash Fiction.

Agree that some grabbed me more than others. The sentence for Before the Storm, sounds exactly like the opening to a gritty detective novel, doesn't it? I haven't read the actual story, so I may just be projecting. Don't tell me if I'm wrong! haha!
