Description:

You will knit or crochet 4 7x7" squares, one each for 4 different partners. The squares MUST measure 7"x7" AFTER BLOCKING! If in doubt, go slightly smaller, as most yarns will stretch. Squares that are too big will be no good to your partner, as they will not fit with their other squares.

The idea of this is that everyone will receive 4 different unique squares for your afghan, or at least enough to make a pillow.

You can use whatever yarn weight you want to make the squares, the most important thing is the finished size as they will be sewn together by your recipient. This is an excellent way to use up oddments in your stash, but please only use nice quality yarn (ie - no Red Heart). Please tell your partners what yarns you have used for their squares when you send your package.

You can experiment with texture, pattern, stripes, whatever you like, each square can be one solid colour, or a mixture of colours.

I'm happy for people to list preferences if they have allergies, or if there is a colour that they really hate, but the idea of this is that it's a complete surprise, and you end up with something really funky!

This is an international swap!

Oh, and any swappers with multiple no sends or not sending the right items will be banned. New swappers are welcome. Any swappers with even 1 no send from previous 'Afghan Squares' swaps will be banned.

Please ensure that you weave in the ends of your squares, and that you weave in at least 8" to stop it unravelling over time. This is important for the person who receives your squares (think how you would feel if you has lots of loose ends hanging off your afghan!), so I have made it part of the specific swap requirements.

Please also block your squares before sending to ensure that they will be the right size for your partner to be able to sew them together.

It would also be nice if you could include a small piece of the yarn used for each square, so that your recipient has some matching thread for sewing their squares together.

Following another suggestion, please can all international mailings be done by AIRMAIL. This shouldn't cost too much as each square will be fairly light. There have been instances in other swaps with small items being sent surface, which can take up to 3 months in some cases, and the sender being given a bad rating because nothing has arrived.

Can you list some brand names of yarn that would be ok to use?

I don't want my partner to be disapointed.

dashenka 12/18/2006 #

FlouncyPenguin,

good quality yarn seems to start at about $6 (ร‚ยฃ3) per 50g ball/skein, and is usually made from natural fibres. Some brands are Rowan, Debbie Bliss, Blue Sky Alpacas, Mission Falls and Manos to name a few. There are literally thousands available. Knitpicks also have some lovely yarns at very reasonable prices too.

Hope that helps.

wooo hooo! Ready for the next one! I've been using Plymouth Yarn - Encore Colorspun. THey are 75% Acrylic and 25% wool. They can be found on line and in most local yarn stores. They are nicely priced about $5-$6 for 100G. I've been using this yarn for my xmas scarves, skibands, wristlets and leg warmers. They have a huge variety of solids, varigated and shaded to choose from. You'll find a LOT of sales as the spring lines are just around the corner.

I have one square almost finished. It's made of Brown sheep wool.

dashenka 01/10/2007 #

Hi,

When you send your squares, could you please include a note saying who you are?

Thanks

user5076 01/16/2007 #

Good suggestion Dashenka. I also like to know what stitch they used if its something other than garter or stockingnet.

Hi girls, I sent my squares out today. (A little late - I am sorry but live seemed to run away with me for a few days there!)Sissie, Lux2night, Wendy and Dashenka you should get them soon.... they are coming from the Uk so it might take a while for them to get to everyone but Wendy!

wendyswoolies 02/ 9/2007 #

I see from Stephanie's blog she has received three of her 4 squares - I am very jealous as I haven't received any yet :(

Cassandra 02/10/2007 #

i haven't received any yet. I believe Wendy received her square from me.

wendyswoolies 02/10/2007 #

After posting I hadn't received any squares I of course got some yesterday in the post! Check my blog www.wendyswoolies.com

lux2night 02/16/2007 #

I have received all my squares, and uploaded them in the gallery. Thank you Wendy, Dashenka, Ruth, and Cassandra!

wendyswoolies 02/16/2007 #

I have only received two squares :( - thanks to Stephanie and Cassandra. Have tried to contact my other two sendees but no response from either

Cassandra 02/17/2007 #

i have only received 1 square. Where are my other 3?

wendyswoolies 02/19/2007 #

Please, please, please - if you were recipient of one of my squares can you just let me know you got it ok? I have sent out about 8 parcels in the past 3 weeks and only had contact from 3 of the recipients to confirm they arrived. I\'m not asking for a huge email - just post here or drop me one line to say \"arrived ok\".....it\'s just a bit worrying when you send things off into the world and never know if they arrive where they are supposed to!

I\'ve not had any squares yet either, but I guess mine have a trip across the ocean to make! Stephanie has sent me an email to say she is resending, any news on my 3 other squares?

wendyswoolies 02/22/2007 #

I have received 2 out of 4 and the other two sendees look from their feedback like they probably didn\'t send. On another note - only heard from 2 of my recipients that they got their squares so please - if I sent to you let me know if the square did or didn\'t arrive.

Cassandra 02/28/2007 #

I still have only received 1 square. My other 2 partners still have it marked as a no send. the other partner has it marked sent but I never got it. She emailed to say she would reship, but I have not received it yet. Her profile has been deleted so I can't contact her. Anybody want to knit me up a square?

user5122 03/ 1/2007 #

Hi all, I did sent my squares to Shayla, Heidi, Rooknit and MsMartiP on february 02. Somebody received is square from me? Because Rooknit wrote me an email to advise she was still waiting. So waiting for my other swapper reply. Stephanie
