Description:

Inspired by THIS 2nd grade art project, we are going to create 12"x12" square collaborative art pieces with 3 other partners.

How This Works

  1. Take a 12" square piece of card stock. Using the image below as a guide, paint, collage, doodle, stamp, ink the entire sheet of card stock.
  2. When you're satisfied with your artwork, cut it up into four 6"x6" pieces.
  3. Keep one piece (any square) for yourself. Send the other 3 pieces to each of your partners.
  4. When you receive square pieces from each of your 3 partners, combine them with your one saved piece to create a 12"x12" collaborative work of art.

Here's a guide I made to help us stay on the same page:

You can measure and lightly draw guidelines on your sheet of card stock, or eyeball it. If you go "outside of the lines" a little it won't be a disaster. The important thing is that your pieces are all square so that they are interchangeable.

Artwork & colors are sender's choice. Send your squares in envelopes and do not forget to sign each piece. If you have any questions, please ask.

Don't hesitate to let me know if anything needs clarifying here! I had debated on making it a smaller size (8" sq)...

Really cool project. It took me a minute to wrap my head around this ... but I get it now. I'm in.

Fatherted 07/17/2013 #

I dont get it, what is with the other swuares, the grey ones? Should I just paint in the white area?

Fatherted 07/17/2013 #

i would be interested in a smaller piece, maybe in soem weeks? :) 4x 4-inch-pieces would be great. I can send maximum 12cm (4.7in) on one side, if its bigger postage would kill me.

stephiedee 07/18/2013 #

@Fatherted - all the areas would have design in them (like the images at the inspiration link). It's just a pattern to follow so when you get your pieces from your partners and put them back together, it'll be a somewhat cohesive piece. If we all just did a random 12x12 artwork and cut it up, the pieces really wouldn't go together.

If the preference leans towards doing this smaller, I can edit this swap. Otherwise I can host a smaller version soon-ish :)

I would love to join the next round of this if it were smaller. Maybe 8 x 8"? Its not just the shipping considerations for me but storage. I try to keep all of my swap items to a size that will fit in 8.5 x 11" albums.

Great idea for a swap though and I look forward to joining a later round!

ah i get it!!!! :) thank you! my brain did not function yesterday. i stumble upon your sentence nr 3 and 4. the "partners" are different partners each time? my 3 send to partner will get my finished 3 pieces I made and my 3 partners who I rate will send me their pieces they finished.

Fatherted 07/18/2013 #

I also would like to join a later round with smaller sizes. It is a great idea!

Send out 3 pieces (each one a part of the larger square) to 3 partners - get 3 pieces from 3 partners.

If at least a couple of other people are up for this as 12"x12", we can go ahead with it as-is. I'd really love some new wall art, and have an old square canvas this would fit perfectly on :)

Count on seeing an 8"x8" version in the future! I'm glad there's interest either way.

Ahh! Got it! I too will wait for the 8"x8" version... Pretty cool idea!

FarStarr 07/24/2013 #

I get it now that I looked at the first link. I'm not sure why people would be concerned about the size and mailing as the largest piece you are mailing is only 6x6...right?

stephiedee 07/24/2013 #

@FarStarr - yep.

Fatherted 07/26/2013 #

because i have size restrictions, if i would send 6 inch piece, i would pay package costs, 3,45Γ’β€šΒ¬ 3 times, if its smaller I only pay 0,75Γ’β€šΒ¬ in postage :)

Welp, mine's finished ;P If you wanna peek, click here.

Steph - I love yours. Is that second section in all Washi tape? Great idea -- thanks for hosting such a creative swap.

stephiedee 07/30/2013 #

Thanks, Jan! It's strips of paper.

Wanda 08/ 4/2013 #

It's mainly the 12"x12" size that keeps me from joining this too...because I don't have access to that size of cardstock here in the boonies. Or at least I have never seen it. I have no access to a Hobby Lobby or Michael's normally. But I was considering just cutting the cardstock I do have (8"x11.5") into 6"x6" squares, then attaching them together and doing the artwork, then cutting them apart again. Time is an issue for me right now, though, so not sure if I could join right now even with that as an option. However, I will definately plan on joining an 8"x8" size swap. :)

I stumbled upon this, almost too late. I think this will be really neat when it is done!!! I am in!

stephiedee 08/ 5/2013 #

@Wanda - I think in that case, making it work with the supplies you do have would be acceptable. You'd still get the desired end result, and that's what matters.

bigmamabird 08/ 8/2013 #

Hey, this would be fun in a circle too..!
