Description:

Quilt (kwilt) n. An item created through the technique of joining at least two fabric layers by stitches or ties.

See? That's not even remotely scary for crafting queens like us.

For this swap, you will create a mini quilt through your interpretation of the above definition--sender's choice. The dimensions need to be at least 8 inches on one side finished, and no side smaller than 6 inches, and this is for a finished project ready to be used/displayed, but those are the only two guidelines.

Some suggestions for those who do not own a sewing machine and/or have never considered making a quilt:

--You can use flannel instead of "batting" and embroidery floss or yarn instead of thread for an-easier-to-sew-by-hand project. (handsewing is not mandatory, but is an option)
--You can use any type of fabric for this project. But if you pick unusual fabrics (thick home decor types, etc.) it may be difficult to sew.
--Fleece with one layer of fabric on it makes an adorable project.
--Don't be afraid to try this even if you've never done it before. This is for beginners and beyond, so no one will judge you even if your stitches are huge or you can't sew a straight line.

I am not going to spend a lot of time on ratings, etc. as this is a group swap so we are all good swappers here. But I will angel if necessary due to unexpected illness, etc.

PM me with any questions.

@LINBUR0100 I have wanted to try quilting but never have, this seems like a good opportunity. The swap looks like this is pretty flexible, is there a good design to start with? When you say ready for display, what does that mean?

Psst still sounds just a little scary, but I'm gonna put on my big girl panties:)

Welcome @junieandj I'm so excited that you are willing to give it a try.

Yes I'm purposefully leaving this really wide open so that crafters from a variety of backgrounds won't be intimidated to try it. I know from my experience as a paper crafter that there is a huge variety of methods and techniques out there, and a lot of talented people, and I don't want to stimy that creativity. :-)

"Ready for Display" means that the recipient shouldn't have to do anything to it. So if it is intended to be a wall hanging, it should have some sort of hanging sleeve or ribbon.

I'll send you a PM with some ideas and suggestions for first projects.

This is a great swap! I also want to try quilting, but I'm not sure I have the time to tackle a big project. Great idea. :D

@LINDBUR0100 I also would like you to send me some ideas and suggestions. Thank you, Shirley

I also would love to join but does that mean it has to have a back part too like real quilt or is it just the facing, Thanks Fallpetals

Hi @fallpetals The item you make should be "finished" and ready for display, but technically you do not have to use three layers to make a quilt. If you do decide to use a traditional batting, then yes, it should have a backing as well. But if you decide to do a two layer quilt (a top and a felt, flannel, or fleece back for example) then the third layer is not necessary. Basically as long as the item looks "finished" and not like it is missing something, then it should be fine.

That said, there should definitely be at least two layers to your project, as the very definition of a quilt is joining two or more layers together and that is one of the things that offsets if from an embroidery or needlework project. :-)

Let me know if you have any other questions. Happy swapping!
